Is Sooner Really Better? Early Offers, Explained
Heard other students flexing about early offers? Here's the scoop on what they are, how they happen, & why your time to shine may still be coming.
If you're a grade 12 student looking to apply to university, you've probably heard whispers about early offers — those magical acceptances that seem to land in your friends' inboxes before you've even finished applying (!). Curious? Well, here's what all the hype is about:
What is an early offer?
The second you hit "Submit" on your OUAC application, the universities you've applied to start gathering your academic information. In some cases, they'll even look at your grade 11 marks to get a sense of how you've performed so far.
An early offer (also called a conditional early acceptance) is a chance for a university to reward students who've shown "strong academic performance" before their grade 12 marks are finalized. If your grade 11 average (especially in your top 3U/M courses) meets a university's cutoff, you might get an early offer before your first semester even ends!
But don't panic if you're not part of that first wave of offers. Most students receive their offers after the January 15 OUAC deadline, once all grades have been submitted.
The pros (and a couple cons)
Getting an early offer can feel incredible — an enormous confidence boost and a sign your hard work is really paying off — but it's not the only path to university. Here's what to keep in mind if you apply and receive an early offer:
Pros:
- Less stress, more clarity: Knowing you have a conditional spot secured can take a huge weight off your shoulders (and keep supporters off your back 😉) during the remainder of grade 12.
- A motivation boost: Early recognition can keep you focused and excited to finish strong.
- More time to plan: You can start planning residence and scholarship applications and have more time to work on any required supplemental documents.
Cons:
- It's conditional: Your offer depends on maintaining certain grades in your grade 12 courses. Your work isn't done just because you've been offered an early acceptance.
- Timing can vary: Some programs — especially competitive ones like BBA or Health Sciences — may not send out early offers at all, since they need to review more complete academic data later in the year.
What this means at Laurier
At Wilfrid Laurier University, we send admission decisions on an ongoing basis from November to May, which means you could receive an offer to most programs anytime within that window. Some highly competitive programs like those in the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics typically wait until closer to May to make final decisions.
If you're offered an early acceptance, that doesn't mean you're locked in (unless you accept your offer on OUAC) — you have until June to decide which university you'll call home. And if you don't hear back early, that doesn't mean bad news — many Laurier students receive their offers later in the cycle and still find their perfect fit here.
Whether you're refreshing your OUAC portal every morning or waiting patiently for those final golden marks to roll in, know that your path to university is just beginning — and there's plenty of time to shine.
Get a jump on your future. Apply to Laurier today!
